Driving through Atlanta, you are greeted by murals gracing walls and structures that tell the stories of the city all while bringing color and beauty to this metropolis. But one local artist is taking things a step further by including the community in her pieces.
Public artist Aysha Pennerman’s love for art began when she was just a child. Growing up around art and encouraged by her family, Pennerman studied art at Georgia State University. Here she would gain an interest in graphic design which would lead her to work with The Apex Museum in Atlanta doing branding and designing.
After graduation, Pennerman would join the corporate world as a graphic designer. Her time with a local corporate realty firm would ultimately lead her to where she is today. Pennerman describes how the annual community service days opened her eyes to the type of work she now does full-time.

Pennerman's work incorporates the community in a multitude of ways. This mural for the historic Reynoldstown area of Atlanta includes actual members of this community. Pennerman designed this mural and invited the community out to help her bring it to life, each taking a brush to the wall.
Though, giving up control as an artist is not alway an easy task, for Pennerman, its worth it. "There's extra steps that are involved when we do community work, but I feel like the impact from it and the connections that are made during these projects are worth it." said Pennerman.

Pennerman cites studies that show how art impacts spaces and health as to why it is so important for community and her work.

Projects come to Pennerman in a variety of ways, from some places or organizations reaching out to her for a commission, to her submitting proposals or applying for projects. Pennerman will take her time to gather as much information as she can from her clients or the community before creating a couple concepts and mocking them up. Once she recieves feedback and approval, the painting begins.
IMPACTFUL BRUSH
Impactful Brush is the non-profit organization started by Aysha Pennerman. It is an organization that works with the community and the youth to teach and create access to public and community art. Impactful Brush does community projects as wells as consultations, giving those who work with them the tools they need to execute their own projects.
Pennerman and her husband are currently working to grow impactful brush and take its impact outside of Atlanta. Keep your eyes peeled, soon Aysha Pennerman will be an international name bringing art and service to communities around the world.
